I Have A Dream

Good afternoon, dear judges and fellow students.

A dream is a goal one struggles to achieve. Dreams are big, and sometimes they seem to be far away. That’s why they change along with your values as you grow old. At different stages, people aim at different targets. Now, I would like share with you my dream, a dream that grows old with me and will probably keep on changing.

When I was small, and first started school, the most powerful person I knew in the world was the teacher. She was the god in the whole universe who could demand everything she wanted. “Let there be silence.” Then our class was muted. “Let all students get in line.” Then the students would immediately get into their positions as fast as soldiers. If we failed following her commands, my teacher could have the most ultimate power to carry out the most severe punishments. I was completely under her power. After a while, I realized there was this even more amazing person called “The Principal”. In a kiddy world just like mine, this “principal” person was even more powerful than the teacher. What the principal said was the law to everything. Imagine this: she was in charge of ALL the teachers in our school! The word “obey” practically rang in all of the student’s ears every time she spoke. If our teachers were Professor Snape, Lupin, and McGonnagall in Hogwarts that had magical powers, you’ll see: they are not as great as Dumbledore who could defeat the most evil sorcerer in magical history. I was awestruck. I promised myself that I would be that kind of person in power when I grew up.

But as I grew up, more majestic jobs than the principal’s cropped up. The only problem was that every one of them still had a boss to answer to. Then it suddenly became clear: if I were a teacher, my teaching would be guided by what the principal or the parents have said. If I were an entrepreneur, my clients’ wishes would influence greatly on my decisions. Even if I were the president of the whole country, the people would still have the power to overthrow me. Nobody, absolutely NOBODY, can do whatever he or she wants. No one is one hundred percent free of control of others. The best thing I can do is, not to find powerful jobs with lots of people to boss around, but to be good at whatever I choose to do. Instead of being the boss of a horde of students like what my teacher was, I wish to be the boss of myself.

What can I do to be my own boss? I think, in order to lead a self-fulfilling life, I need to do what I am best at. I need to strive to be the best in my field. I need to take full responsibility of what I was, what I am, and what I will become. I like math, so accounting or tax billing will probably be a nice path for me. One day when I become the manager of an accounting department, I wish to devote myself to my dream job. Rather than complaining about the long working hours or heavy workload, I wish to seek for the best benefits for my clients. This is a wonderfully more feasible dream to me now. And I think I will definitely make it happen when I grow up. “Let my dream come true.” This is the dream that I will forever pursue.
