I Have A Dream

80431高瑞堂

Good afternoon, my dear judges and fellow students.

Martin Luther King once said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of the creed that all men are created equal.” What he expected is to stop racial discrimination. What he called for is the equality between the black and the white. From his speech, we can see a grand vision that people of different colors and races hold hands in true friendship. And this is ALSO what I have dreamed for the future of Taiwan. Although we may have different religions, cultural backgrounds, and political beliefs, we can still stand hand-in-hand peacefully as friends.

In Taiwan, there is a serious problem between the native Taiwanese and the Mainlanders’ relationship. The problem has been brought up every time when the things turn to the politics. They both have prejudice to each other so deeply that they fight and quarrel a lot, as we often see in the television shows. Because they are not on the “same side,” they refuse to understand each other. Another case is that, the aboriginals have been treated unequally from a long time ago. As we saw in the news on disasters caused by Typhoon Morakot, every time when a typhoon hit Taiwan, the people in the tribes are always the ones who suffer most. They live in the mountains and they risk their life of losing their home and family during the typhoons. Besides, children in Taiwan now are in a nightmare of seeing their parents divorce. Some miserable children are in the dilemma of choosing between their parents. Fathers and mothers are always fighting and more and more families are breaking.

We are facing tons of problems. And it’s our responsibility to face them and solve them. I can’t solve them myself now. I know that I am just a kid. I am still young. But I am not afraid of say it out loud. I am not afraid of establishing my goal. I know it is a long way to go, and it takes complicated process to make my dream come true. Still, here is my suggestion to the problems I have mentioned above: “don’t judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins.” You can’t criticize others before you get along with him and understand him. If native Taiwanese and Mainlanders can pay more attention to what the other side has said, we can create a more peaceful country, not for either side, but for all the people. If we can stop questioning whose fault it is after typhoons and pay more attention to what the aboriginals need most, we can help to ease their pain of suffering. If a husband and a wife can see things through each other’s eyes, we can create a happier family and benefit our children.

It is a dream that may sound too big to you. But I believe that to achieve something big in life, you will have to think big. Your dream should be bigger and you should try every way to achieve it. As we often hear: NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. It is my dream that is never impossible.
