A Dream Holiday

LONDON. LONDON. What comes to your mind when you hear the name of the city, London? The capital of England? The first city in the world that has an underground railway? Or “(Sings.) London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down”? For me, London is a place of wonder that is most suited for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. What will I do in the City of Fog if I have the chance to spend my holiday there?

First, I won’t miss the ride on the highest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Standing high up in the air, I want to enjoy the panoramic view of London and take beautiful pictures as perfect as postcards. Also, I want to enjoy an afternoon tea and have a taste of the finest tradition of England: sipping a delightful cup of tea, chatting with some locals, eating freshly baked scones and crumpets, and enjoying the afternoon that is flavored with easiness and relaxation. Without any particular destination, I want to take an easy walk as a Londoner. I want to stroll along the streets to see if their gentlemen really wear bowler hats and carry black umbrellas.

Besides gazing at the amazing scenery and experiencing the English lifestyle, there is one thing about London that I shall never miss: its history. I won’t miss some of the important historical sites that tell the ancient story of London: the Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed; the Tower of London, which has been standing guard over the capital for hundreds of years; the River Thames, which, since the Tudors, used to be lined with the ships of British navy; and the Palace of Westminster where laws governing British life are debated and passed.

In addition, as one of the countries that still preserve a monarchy, England is known for its kings, queens, and the royal family. I will take a tour in Buckingham Palace, the official residence of Britain’s sovereigns. Just imagine: during the Changing of the Guard, the soldiers, with their red uniforms and black bearskins caps, parade in troops and march at a uniform pace. How wonderful it is to witness the solemn moment and pay my respects to the royal family!

This is my London, a city with stunning spectacular beauty, tremendous cultural significance, reminiscent of the old world. Taking a trip to London will be the best plan for my dream holiday. I can relax my mind with nothing to worry about and embrace a different style of living. Instead of temporarily escaping from schoolwork and tests, I wish to have a holiday which is more meaningful, that is, an alternative chance to experience life in London. Samuel Johnson once said, “By seeing London, I have seen as much of life as the world can show.” And this is my London that I want to share with you all.
